The escalating clashes along Syria's border with Turkey reflect the need for a comprehensive peace plan for the war-torn country, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault told FRANCE 24 in a wide-ranging interview on Wednesday. Ayrault also touched on Europe's refugee crisis, the challenges facing a post-Brexit European Union, and the "puerile" burkini row that has dominated headlines in France.

The appointment of French politician Jean-Pierre Chevènement to head the newly formed Foundation for Islam in France, which aims to improve relations between the state and the Muslim community, has sparked controversy in many French circles. Chevènement, a former French interior minister, was chosen to head the Foundation for Islam in France Monday following a meeting between current Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Muslim community leaders in Paris. Announcing the decision Monday, Cazeneuve said the aim of the discussions was to forge “an Islam anchored in the values of the French Republic”. But the choice of Chevènement, a 77-year-old career politician whose past posts include defence as well as interior minister, was greeted with skepticism by many activists and community leaders. “It’s a joke,” civil rights activist Yasser Louati, whose work focuses on issues of Islamophobia and national security, told FRANCE 24. “We keep treating Muslims as if they are foreig

France’s maverick politician Emmanuel Macron announced his resignation Tuesday as economy minister but stopped short of declaring an official bid for the presidency in the 2017 election. In a much-awaited announcement, Macron said he was quitting government to “open a new chapter” in his “fight to bring together” the French people to “start a new project”. The 38-year-old former investment banker is the head of the “En Marche” (On the Move) movement, which he founded earlier this year to the chagrin of fellow ministers in President François Hollande’s government. Despite widespread speculation that the maverick French politician would announce his intention to run for the 2017 presidential race, Macron stopped short of declaring his candidacy Tuesday, choosing instead to leave the door open for a formal declaration at a future date. "I am determined to do everything so our values, ideas and actions can transform France starting next year," Macron told journalists a

French bans on burkini swimwear are "a grave and illegal breach of fundamental freedoms" and a "stupid reaction" to recent extremist attacks, the UN human rights office said on Tuesday. Spokesman Rupert Colville of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said the UN wants French officials to lift the bans "immediately", adding that they do not increase security. France's highest court, the Council of State (Conseil d'Etat), has already struck down one town's ban on the burkini, effectively invalidating all such bans. But some towns have said they will continue with the prohibitions. Colville said such bans "fuel religious intolerance and the stigmatisation of Muslims", and "have only succeeded in increasing tensions". "These decrees do not improve the security situation but rather fuel religious intolerance and the stigmatisation of Muslims in France, especially women," Colville said. Local authorities have said the wearing of burkinis threatens public order. But people wh

The national identity crisis exposed by France's burkini controversy threatens to dominate the country's presidential campaign as rival candidates scramble to position themselves on the hot-button issue. Along with the sluggish economy, the relationship between France's Muslims and non-Muslims has been a recurring theme as presidential hopefuls kick off campaigning for the April-May election. The burkini bans by some French coastal towns drew international condemnation after images circulated online of police appearing to require a Muslim woman to disrobe on a crowded beach. But the bans on the body-covering swimsuits have attracted considerable support in France, where much of the political right and the country’s Socialist prime minister, Manuel Valls, rallied behind the mayors. A key ruling by France’s highest administrative court on Friday, which overturned the burkini ban in one southern town, has failed to put an end to the debate. Some mayors are refusing to rescind their ba

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve will hold a day of talks on Islam in France Monday in an effort to better integrate the religion with the “values of the Republic”. Although the controversy over the burkini ban is far from over, leaders of France’s Muslim community hope that Monday’s conference will help decisively turn the page on the issue now that the ban has been overturned in at least one town. “This positive step will bring an end to the nauseating story of the burkini,” said Anouar Kbibech, president of the French Council of the Muslim Faith (Conseil français du culte musulman, or CFCM). >> Watch more on FRANCE24.com: “French Connections: Understanding the burkini ban” The talks will be held at the interior ministry in Paris, where religious leaders, community leaders and lawmakers will hold a series of meetings aimed at establishing a better “foundation for Islam in France”. Speaking to French daily La Croix on Sunday, Cazeneuve reiterated t

French-born actor Gérard Depardieu on Saturday inaugurated a cultural and film centre bearing his name in Saransk, the capital of the Russian region of Mordovia in which Depardieu is a registered resident, local media reported. The 67-year-old film icon travelled Saturday afternoon from Paris to Saransk, where he was welcomed by local leaders. Depardieu spoke in front of several hundred people, according to photographs of the event released to the media. “I am very flattered that a cultural centre will have my name. It’s too bad that I can’t come to Saransk more often,” Depardieu said, the local newspaper Izvestia Mordovii reported. “In Mordovia, I feel like a true Russian ... I am also a resident of Saransk and I am going to vote in the elections,” he added. Depardieu, known internationally for his roles in films such as "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Green Card", is officially registered as a resident and entrepreneur in Saransk, a city of 300,000 in habitants located abou

US rail operator Amtrak on Friday awarded a $2.0 billion (1.8 billion euros) contract to French manufacturer Alstom to supply new high-speed trains for its key Acela service between Washington, New York and Boston. The landmark deal for 28 new passenger trains will boost Amtrak's speed and capacity along its most heavily used and profitable route, with more than 3.5 million passengers a year, from 2021. The trains will carry more than 400 passengers, about one-third more than the existing Acela northeastern corridor express service, with a maximum speed of 300 kilometres per hour (180 miles per hour), though normal speeds will hover near 260 kilometres an hour. Amtrak’s current high-speed trains can reach a top speed of 241 kilometres per hour, according to the company’s website. In the deal Alstom, which makes France's famed TGV trains, agreed to manufacture most of the new equipment for Amtrak, dubbed its Avelia Liberty line, at its plant in Hornell, New York. The new trains, whi

The contest to pick a presidential nominee among France’s right-wing camp is shaping up as a battle between former president Nicolas Sarkozy and Bordeaux Mayor Alain Juppé, with Islam’s place in France the hot issue of the primaries. Around a dozen members of the main opposition Les Républicains party (formerly UMP) have declared themselves candidates in the November primary, which is widely expected to come down to a duel between Sarkozy, who lost his re-election bid in 2012, and Juppé, a defence and foreign minister under the former president. Sarkozy unofficially kicked off his campaign this week by announcing his candidacy in a new book, with Juppé expected to dive into the primary waters with a speech on August 27. His talk is all the more anticipated since Juppé, the frontrunner according to opinion polls, was largely absent from public view this summer, even as France reeled from a deadly truck attack in Nice that killed 86 people during Bastille Day celebrations and th

France's top administrative court on Friday overturned a ban on full-body burkini swimsuits in a southern French town amid shock and anger worldwide after some Muslim women were ordered to remove body-concealing garments on French Riviera beaches. The State Council (Conseil d'État) gave the ruling following a request from the Human Rights League and a Muslim advocacy group to overturn the burkini ban in the Mediterranean town of Villeneuve-Loubet on the grounds it contravenes civil liberties. The court ruled that local authorities could only restrict individual liberties if there was a "proven risk" to public order. It said the decree to ban burkinis in Villeneuve-Loubet "seriously, and clearly illegally, breached the fundamental freedoms to come and go, the freedom of beliefs and individual freedom". The decision overturned a ruling by an administrative court in Nice on Monday, which had argued that the ban was "necessary, appropriate and proportionate" to prevent public disorder am
