Residents of the town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray on Wednesday flocked to a makeshift psychological unit in the Town Hall, a day after two knife-wielding attackers killed a priest and took hostages in the local Catholic church.

Two attackers claiming allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group on Tuesday killed 86-year-old priest Jacques Hamel and injured another parishioner before being shot dead by police.

It was just the latest in a series of deadly terrorist attacks to strike France in recent months, but residents of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray were struggling with the idea that their otherwise sleepy town had become a target for jihadists.

Psychologist Frédéric Tran travelled from the nearby city of Rouen to volunteer his services. He said people of all ages – from teens to the elderly – have been streaming in to seek support.

“Many people this morning wanted to talk about their fears. They did not believe something like this could happen so close to their homes,” Tran, 53, told the AFP news agency during a hurried lunch break.

“The attack has become a source of a lot of anxiety and a general feeling of insecurity,” he added.

Asked how ordinary residents of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray and other cities struck by terrorists could cope with tragedy, Tran said it was essential to talk with others who were experiencing the same worries.

“It is important to be with others,” the psychologist said, adding that staying home alone and watching television images of the tragedy was a bad idea.

“I think the trauma is something we can overcome together, there is a solidarity that emerges,” Tran said, citing examples of employees from the mayor's office who had cut holidays short to return to Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray to help.

Tran said residents of the town would need continued support in the weeks and months ahead. But his consultations last on average only 30 minutes, desperately little time to heal the psychological wounds of the attack.
