French security forces are on high alert as the country prepares to see in the New Year, with 10,000 police officers deployed in the Paris region alone to guarantee the safety of residents and tourists. Around 600,000 revellers are expected to gather on the French capital's iconic Avenue des Champs-Elysées, for the traditional New Year celebration. As in other major weste cities, security has been tightened in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks that have struck Europe. The world's most famous avenue will become a no-car zone, protected by concrete blocks, to prevent a repeat of the deadly truck attacks that hit Nice and Berlin this year. Paris officials said 2,000 security officers and...

Fresh fires bued inside the Calais 'Jungle' Wednesday as French authorities said they were wrapping up a major operation to evacuate and demolish the notorious shantytown. The operation passed off peacefully for the most part, though some migrants torched tents and shelters in a last act of defiance as their hopes of a new life in Britain evaporated. But charities said many unaccompanied minors had not been processed and FRANCE 24’s reporter at the scene said many migrants remained in the...

Anthony Vaccarello made his name with unfeasibly small and sexy dresses, and in his hugely anticipated debut for Saint Laurent late Tuesday at Paris fashion week, the Belgian designer kept his nose clean and his skirts short. If the directors of the iconic French brand, whose profits had rocketed to record levels under Hedi Slimane, were worried his replacement might rip up the magic formula, they can rest easy. For Vaccarello has far from tued his back on Slimane's expensively grungy rock star chic. Instead he picked up the uber-bling 1980s-style power glamour of Slimane's parting show and honed it down in his own sleeker, sexier even blacker image. For once there were no slits to show of...

Since the begiing of the summer, the number of migrants in the Calais "Jungle" camp has risen, and locals are reaching saturation point. On Monday, truckers and farmers blockaded the main A16 motorway to demand the dismantling of France’s largest migrant camp. Our colleagues from France 2 went to meet exasperated residents but also migrants who dream of a better life and who try to reach the UK on a daily basis. On France24.com: Calais 'Jungle' migrant camp to be ‘gradually dismantled’. A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Elom Marcel Toble and Claire Pryde.
